Naturalizing Logic: How Knowledge of Mechanisms Enhances Inductive Inference

چکیده
This paper naturalizes inductive inference by showing how scientific knowledge of real mechanisms provides large benefits to it. I show about contributes generalization, the best explanation, causal inference, and reasoning with probabilities. Generalization from some A are B all is more plausible when a mechanism connects B. Inference explanation strengthened explanations mechanistic explanatory hypotheses themselves mechanistically explained. Causal in medical counterfactual reasoning, analogy also benefit connections. Mechanisms help problems concerning interpretation, availability, computation

Critical Study Errors of Reasoning, Naturalizing the Logic of Inference
John Woods’s stated aim in this monograph is to investigate premise-conclusion reasoning “with a special emphasis of factors in play when it falls into error, when bad reasoning s mistaken for good” (1). Woods further states that he believes that logic has not done well in investigating these topics. To do better, logic needs some reconstruction to become “empirically sensitive,” taking account...
متن کاملCarnap and the Logic of Inductive Inference
This chapter discusses Carnap’s work on probability and induction, using the notation and terminology of modern mathematical probability, viewed from the perspective of the modern Bayesian or subjective school of probability. (It is a much expanded and more mathematical version of [Zabell, 2007]). Carnap initially used a logical notation and terminology that made his work accessible and interes...
متن کاملBiochemical Knowledge Discovery Using Inductive Logic Programming
Machine Learning algorithms are being increasingly used for knowledge discovery tasks. Approaches can be broadly divided by distinguishing discovery of procedural from that of declarative knowledge. Client requirements determine which of these is appropriate. This paper discusses an experimental application of machine learning in an area related to drug design. The bottleneck here is in finding...
متن کاملReview of Errors of Reasoning. Naturalizing the Logic of Inference, by John Woods
John Woods’ Errors of Reasoning (EoR) flies in the face of logical orthodoxy in an astonishing number of ways. Its 550 pages make numerous claims on a great many subjects. Due to space limitations, this review will focus only on some of them. I nevertheless hope to give the general flavour of this thought-provoking book. The official core topic of EoR is the one of logical fallacies. And the co...
متن کاملThe Problem of Analogical Inference in Inductive Logic
We consider one problem that was largely left open by Rudolf Carnap in his work on inductive logic, the problem of analogical inference. After discussing some previous attempts to solve this problem, we propose a new solution that is based on the ideas of Bruno de Finetti on probabilistic symmetries. We explain how our new inductive logic can be developed within the Carnapian paradigm of induct...
